Services at BWHC in response to Domestic Violence during the COVID19 pandemic and lockdown

Evidence from the Australian Institute of Health Welfare has shown that during the COVID19 pandemic, the welfare of women and children in the community has been impacted on a greater level due to the increase of reported domestic violence incidence.

BWHC was aware of the intensity and escalation of domestic violence during the last couple of years due to victims and perpetrators due to increased time spent together due to the pandemic. Further more the financial stress associated with loss of jobs and isolation saw incidence of domestic violence increase. BWHC received an increase in women requesting support during this time, and an increase in unreported domestic violence. As a result BWHC were able to provide extra services due to funding received from Women’s NSW, Department of communities and Justice, Multicultural NSW and Responsible gambling NSW aiming to provide additional domestic violence and family services during this time.
